Deviating from the prompt of '2 Lives 2 Miles Apart', this post examines two generalized views of today's mainstream feminist movement from different lenses, based off my experience with feminism in Malaysia (specifically, from a youth perspective). From this, we will come to discover what exactly people mean when they say there are feminisms, and how important it is to ensure our goals are compatible with each other in order to achieve them. - You are from an upper middle-...

The title is one of my favourite quotes from the short book “We should all be feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie which is a modified version of a talk she delivered in December 2012 at TEDxEuston, a yearly conference focused on Africa. I chose to recommend this “book” because despite its length, it forced me to take a deeper look at my own life and experiences. Just like her friend Louis in the book, my thinking was “I don’t see what you mean by things being diffe...

Even though most women would object to being denied access to professional spheres and having their opinions shut down because of their gender, most still happily go along with the idea that women, because of our physiological, psychological, or ‘God given’ differences with men, are the inferior gender. There are a lot of day to day conversations that I can bring up to explain my point, but it’s...

The world is occupied by men and women who strive to attain a height. In my everyday life, i have tried my best to affect, influence and sympathize with youths -- mostly girls. I don't know what made me stand for the right of girls, but i believe that there's a need for it. Or perhaps, it was due to my best friend untimely and unwanted pregnancy, at 16. Today, although i have no youth-led group, but i am proud to be a Feminist. Because every girls right is IMPORTANT, NECESSARY and WORTHWHILE. Mo...

Are you a fan of GIFs? Well the great news is that they can be included in your VOY posts. I think that they're a fun way of sharing words of wisdom and inspirational quotes, from films and other forms of media. We'll to post them on a regular basis with a short explanation of why they were chosen. But we'd love your suggestions and submissions too - either in the comments section or on Twitter (@voicesofyouth). This GIF is one that I created using a plugin for Google Chrome....

I got to know Dr. Sunitha Krishnan when I was researching human trafficking and measures to prevent it. I thought she might be a person related to the media or an NGO. I started researching with a TED talk show. The introduction of the video was utterly shocking. Children as young as ages three and four were being raped and sold into the flesh trade. I really didn't know that innocent children are forced into such activities. I was really moved by what Sunitha was saying about thes...
