The recent wedding between a senior British diplomat to his male partner in Beijing has instigated a discussion over gay rights in China. You can read about it here. The couple's posting of their wedding on Chinese site Weibo was quickly shared more than 60,000 times. However many Chinese commentators took to Weibo and other social media websites to attack the couple. One said, “That country [Britain] is sick. It’s like the last days of Rome”. Another said that same-sex...

"Dude that's so gay" When did phrases like this become an insult? Have you ever been called "faggot" or "fag"? When and why did people make this a degrading term? When did being gay become an illness or an abnormality? Why do people go against gay rights? I believe it's because of one thing and it's total ignorance. Some may take it on the religious side but Pope Francis said : What am I supposed to do, if a son of God comes seeking help and he's gay? Am I supposed to turn th...

This is a topic I have given a lot of time to ponder over, even before I was selected for the VOY internship. In fact, if one gives sufficient time and attention to the matter, one would find a spectrum of youth considerations that have found place among the Sri Lankan communities. I decided to sum up the whole gamut of things into one word: Rights. Over the years, even during the young days of my parents and much before that, the Sri Lankan youth have been very particular about...

“Never buy a Japanese car or anything large that’s Japanese. We can’t forget what they did to us,” speaking in Chinese, my grandmother shook her head disapprovingly as she walked away from Japan House’s doors and into the parked car. The Volvo deftly slid out from the Japanese restaurant drive way onto the service road. My mother who is driving in the front seat gives a soft reproaching glance at her mother-in-law. I immediately stop the tickle war with my brother and s...

Recently, I was reading an article about Iran. You know, I don't really delve into matters pertaining to the Middle East. I mean, it's always been a dream of mine to learn Arabic, but I don't really keep up with the news from that region. However, the article which I read was striking. Through it, I found out that six people (specifically young dancers) were arrested for making a fan video for Pharell Williams's song "Happy". Although they were recently freed, it got me thinking....

Every child is born with the right to education. Education is the most important aspect in every child's life. It prevents them from getting their dreams crushed. Because if their dreams are crushed, their mental and physical abilities will go down. Every child living in any country has the sole right of getting an education. Detaining children in the streets just because of the color of their skin, caste or religion is just wrong and is against the law. The constitution is there t...

The Earth is, surely, full of beauty; for everyone and from every perspective. This world, yet, is full of beauty for solely those who are able to commit to a peaceful lifestyle. Being able to detain such a peaceful lifestyle, despite all the negativities is another discussion which I am, sadly, not going to write about in this argument. Since, if we decided for elevating all the negativities in this article, it would surely go on with no end. As a consequence, this article is goin...

Once upon a time one needed significant means and resources to start a newspaper or a radio station; to reach large numbers of people with a message. The Internet changed this, but up until quite recently it was still necessary for a person to have technical knowledge, resources and access to the right technology in order to, for example, develop a website to share information and connect with others online. The explosion of the social web in the last few years has lowered the...
