I write this blog after the devastating news that Janet, a six- year old little girl, from Manila has passed away. My friend had done some occupational therapy sessions with Janet, and the family treated Janet like she was a precious gem – and that she was. Janet lived in a slum area in Metro Manila. The title of my ramblings is very much a question I face people with far too frequently. Everyone will have heard the phrase ‘we should help our own’ being flung around at one time or another when discussions over charity arises. What I ask you is how do we define this concept of ‘our own.’ Is our own our next door neighbour? Those that live in Scotland? Britain? Europe? United Nations?
