How many times have women been stepped over? How many times have YOU been stepped over because you are a girl? How many times have you been seen as a sexual object? How many times have you LET others step over you because you are a girl? As the years come and go, and the world " evolves " there has been an alarming issue remaining, and it has not ceded -to be honest- it has grown. That issue is the lack of respect, and following of women's and girls rights. We see that women...

Dear VOY, Working with you has been a great journey. I honestly believe that you have made my life a more meaningful one by simply allowing me to write away my concerns on this forum. I have grown mentally and emotionally while reading what many of my peers have written from all over the world. I still cannot believe that I can share my opinion as openly and freely as I do beside my friends from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and beyond. I wish to commemorate my 1 year an...

Hello everyone, as I already introduced myself (in my previous post) a little bit I might now talk to you more about myself and my environment. When I initially arrived to Santiago all I wanted to do was go to the university. I had already gone through the first year of my career and I wanted to continue that one. Eventually I found it at the University of Santiago, it is a huge university. At first I didn't know anything and I was constantly lost. However, people were very kin...

Today, I attended a campaign that encouraged people of Mongu to read and write. The "Lets Read Zambia!" Campaign was held at a basic school were children in Grades 1, 2 and 3 were showing the people of the local community how they are learning and how they can read. I Personally think that if most of the people that were at that event have been encouraged to to read and write, then most of the people will be educated hence reducing the high number of illiteracy. If such is kept on...

Hello Everyone! I´m thrilled about blogging on VOY so here´s a little about me before I start posting: I was born in Colombia and had a typical small town lifestyle. My parents lived in two different cities, so since a very early age I had the chance to have a special approach on two different sides of my country. I grew up in Barranquilla (the most beautiful city in the world OF COURSE) surrounded by beloved friends and family When I turned 17 mom, dad (my dog) and I moved t...

It’s been a while since I wrote for VOY. I’ve been very busy catching up with my new life as a university student. It’s a pretty hectic life but I will try my best to adapt to this new lifestyle of mine. This new experience made me feel privileged that I’ve been chosen to study at one of the finest universities in my country. It was a rollercoaster ride for me. I was a little bit frightened by the whole grown up thing, but this is my sacrifice that I had to do to achiev...

When I was teaching Grade 9 students on my practicum, I would start off the day with an inspirational video. This one in particular, "Day of the Girl" by the amazing YouTube channel, "Shots of Awe" (motivational speaker, Jason Silva) spoke to me. Growing up in a developed country, Canada - I still had challenges towards getting an education. I want to share this with young girls and women who may be going through these challenges. Empowerment and inspiration are important, they dri...

Amadi was sitting on the floor with his classmates, it was an English class. Their teacher was a volunteer from UNHCR, she was perfectly nice and helpful. Amadi was reading his homework when she stopped him and asked: "When you grow up what do you want to be Amadi?" He stood up on his feet and simply answered: "Before thinking of the future we have to first figure out how to deal with our present, and for the moment I want to be a butterfly; to wear my wings, to stand on the Br...

Are you a fan of GIFs? Well the great news is that they can be included in your VOY posts. I think that they're a fun way of sharing words of wisdom and inspirational quotes, from films and other forms of media. We'll to post them on a regular basis with a short explanation of why they were chosen. But we'd love your suggestions and submissions too - either in the comments section or on Twitter (@voicesofyouth). This GIF is one that I created using a plugin for Google Chrome....
