“He who, without violence, threat or fraud, abducts or deceives a minor under 18 years of age, shall be punished by imprisonment for 1 to 5 years and a fine of 200 to 500 dirhams. If the nubile who was removed or deceived marries her abductor, he can no longer be prosecuted except by the persons empowered to demand the annulment of the marriage, and then only after the annulment has been proclaimed.” Article 475 of the Moroccan Penal Code. The Second paragraph of the...

Thank God, 2014 has started well but in order to make better progress it is very important for me to review the year 2013; not to live in the past, but to understand it and use it to create a better future. In the words of Soren Kierkgaard “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” 2013 was not a perfect year for me but it was still great and better than 2012. It started with so much optimism about lots of things I planned for myself but somehow t...

One lovely evening in the first week of December, I had a discussion with a friend who has a passion for writing poems and short stories. He asked for my opinion about a new story he had just wrote. During the course of our conversation, I advised him to join Voices of Youth and always post his write-ups here. He mentioned that he always sees my tweets about Voices of Youth and asked me to tell him more about it. This question and the response I gave inspired me to work on this pos...

What is love? Are you walking in true love? Do you truly love your neighbour as yourself? So many things have been said about love, both those that truly reflect what true love is and those that do not but one thing I am convinced about is that love is the greatest of all and it conquers everything. I came across a piece written by Joel Osteen which really inspired me and has become a creed in my life. I have it pasted on my wall where I recite it every day. It has really boosted m...

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” –Barrack Obama The 5th of December is celebrated every year as the International Volunteers Day by the United Nations. It is a day in which volunteers and volunteerism is celebrated and recognized in all its facets. As a volunteer, I would...

Adolescents are shaping humanity's present and future. Depending on the opportunities and choices they have during this period in life, they can enter adulthood as empowered and active citizens, or be neglected, voiceless and entrenched in poverty. When a girl becomes pregnant, her present and future change radically, and rarely for the better. Her education may end, her job prospects evaporate, and her vulnerabilities to poverty, exclusion and dependency multiply. STATISTICS...

In one of my child rights advocacy visits to secondary schools, I met the principal of a school who clearly prohibited me from talking to his students about the rights they have as children. We had an interesting discussion in which he gave some unsubstantial grounds against the enactment of the Child’s Rights Act. One of the grounds he stated was that the Child’s Rights Act incites rebellion amongst children against their parents and limits the amount of control parents have o...

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHILD LABOUR AND CHILD WORK

I had an argument with a friend, a few days ago about the rights of a child. In the course of the argument i realised that most of the reasons he had against various rights of the child were based on ignorance rather than fact. For example he said prohibiting child labour promotes the idea that children have a right to disobey their parents and not do any work they dont feel like. This is so wrong and it prompted me to write this little piece because i believe there are many others...

This is a continuation of my last post "Lessons from Malala: Part 1" in which I talked about six learns I learnt from Malala Yousafzai’s story. Below is a discussion of more lessons I gathered from Malala. 7) Women should have the same access to education like men. I am yet to find a compelling argument that supports the idea that women should not have the same access to education like men. I have five sisters and I cannot imagine going to school while they stay at home. Accord...
