Goal number 6 of the millennium development goals is concentrated on 3 diseases; TB, AIDS and Malaria. These "big three" are usually prevalent in developing countries and are often identified as one of the major impediments to economic growth. Seeing as World Aids Day is December 1st and the fact that the MDGs "deadline" of 2015 is almost here, how much progress has been made so far? MDGs 6 A and B read "Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS" and "Ac...

Many are cognizant of the fact that the battle for equal treatment of the sexes has still not been won. But now I ask you, is there such a thing as too much? Are we rushing to condemn every little thing as sexist in the name of being feminist? Do you believe that simply because the symbol depicts only men, it ignores women? I recently saw a news segment asking that very same question. Traffic lights have, for a s long as they have existed, used only the symbol of a man. The que...

I recently watched a very interesting documentary film by the producer of An Inconvenient Truth called Fed Up that seeks to highlight the obesity epidemic in the US and the problems related to processed foods and their sugar quantity. Several important lessons can be learned from the documentary including but not limited to "all calories are not created equal", "calories in does not equal calories out" and "congress says pizza, french fries and tomato paste are all vegetables"....

The veracity of Lincoln's words to address the issue of slavery over 150 years ago were sourced from the Bible and the veracity of these words still applies today. The issue of racism is still quite present in our society. One doesn't need to look at the fatal extremes such as the recent shooting of Michael Brown, an 18 year old from Ferguson by a police officer or before that the shooting of 17 year old Treyvon Martin by acquitted George Zimmerman. Before the trial there was s...

Hey guys! This post is just to assure you that I am still alive and well (: I have been pretty busy with exams. I'm writing my last exam for the term tomorrow so I'm looking forward to posting with more frequency! Things I'm happy about this week: 1) The "re-boot" of Internet activism. I'm sure you've all seen the ALS ice bucket challenge that has succeeded in raising donations within a few days to the ALS foundation by millions of dollars and has helped raise aw...

The title is one of my favourite quotes from the short book “We should all be feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie which is a modified version of a talk she delivered in December 2012 at TEDxEuston, a yearly conference focused on Africa. I chose to recommend this “book” because despite its length, it forced me to take a deeper look at my own life and experiences. Just like her friend Louis in the book, my thinking was “I don’t see what you mean by things being diffe...

Let me start by saying that the Internet is literally the greatest thing mankind has ever invented. One might say that this is hyperbole, but I lack the words to describe the importance of the internet in this day and age. Vital would not even come close to doing it justice. I am hard pressed to name something that you can’t do with the help of internet. And being a student at uni, one can safely say that a lot of my life revolves around the internet. As a disclosure, I will use...
