I always get nervous before going on stage in front of many people. It doesn’t matter if it’s simply receiving a certificate or giving a speech. My hands get sweaty and my heart threatens to beat out of my chest. I felt the same way writing my first post for Voices of Youth. Getting selected for the VOY blogging internship meant that my writing will be read by a worldwide audience. Am I really good enough? Would people be interested to hear what I have to say? What if nobod...

Myanmar’s democratic transition since 2011 has been accompanied by the opening of its doors to the international community. Once isolated from the rest of the world, the country has witnessed an influx of tourists, foreign investment and economic development projects in the last five years. As Myanmar goes through its political transformation, there are high hopes for a better future. “Development” and “economic growth” have become buzzwords in the country. It seems tha...

When I was young, I used to visit the British Council Library near my house quite often. It’s the place where I fell in love with J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five and Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. My favorite word at that time was "adventure". Growing up in Myanmar, I spent most of my childhood daydreaming about visiting faraway lands, solving mysteries and embarking on magical adventures. In the fall of 2012, I got a chance to go on a bi...

I met Dissa a few weeks ago at a career event organized by my university in Japan, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU). She was an APU alumna invited to speak at the event. She’s currently an equity analyst at Credit Suisse Singapore as well as the owner of Deaf Café Fingertalk, the first café in Indonesia where all the employees are deaf. She’s only 25 years old but she has had a lot of volunteering experience in many countries. She came to Japan from Indonesia at...

1. "How can you be so stupid?!" The words were accompanied by a loud, exasperated sigh. They sounded like gunshots aimed straight at your heart. You refused to look up and stared at the concrete floor. Your eyes followed a lone ant making its way to the door. You wished you could follow it and leave this classroom. The weight of other students' stares hung heavy on your shoulders. The teacher was saying something, but all you could hear was the word "stupid" playing on repeat....

Day 7 It’s been a week since I arrived here. I cannot sleep. I don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night with the sound of explosions ringing in my ear. I remember that day. I was at school when the bomb exploded. Chaos, debris and blood everywhere. Mother said I was very lucky to be alive. I stopped going to school after that. There was no school to go to anymore. The second bomb destroyed our home. Maybe the first one blew up my good luck. Father said it’s...

In the past few days, many of my friends shared a video on Facebook about a train station in a remote area of Japan that remains open for just one regular passenger. The passenger is a high-school girl who goes to school every day on that train. According to the video, the train station will close down in March this year when the girl graduates. Initially, several news outlets reported that the Japanese railway company planned to close down the station three years ago but waite...

Staring at a blank Microsoft Word document, my eyes are drawn towards a small piece of paper stuck to the top left corner of my computer screen. It takes me back to one particular night several years ago. It was a time when I was frustrated, demotivated and lost. That night, I grabbed a pen and wrote down a very short yet powerful sentence: "Avoid the 3 'C's". Now, I guess you are probably wondering, "What in the world are these 3 'C's?!" Allow me to explain. The first 'C...

This week, I would like to talk about beauty. No, I'm not going to talk about the 2015 Miss Universe pageant which is a very hot topic on the Internet right now. Personally, I am not a fan of beauty pageants. The amount of money and preparation that goes into it. The fact that you need to fit into a restrictive definition of beauty to take part. The concept of being judged for how you look. The competitive nature of such contests. I do not find these things particularly appealing....
