On the 27th February, I received one of the best emails I have ever received. I had been selected to join a once in a lifetime internship with UNICEF’s Voices of Youth, working alongside young people from around the world to write and learn about environmental issues. PeopleNo one could have conveyed to me the true impact that engaging with fellow young people from around the world would have on me. Hearing their stories, learning their characters, reading their stunning pieces... I have been tr...

*BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*I force my heavy eyelids open ever so slightly, and lean over to smack the alarm clock. My head is pounding. 5 AM. Only 3 hours sleep in total. But I have to get up and get going.I drag my body to the edge of the bed, and contemplate the day ahead. It seems like a lifetime will pass before I can return to this bed and rest once again, but it's just another day to tackle. I wake my baby, dress him and carry him downstairs for breakfast. I open the cupboard, but inside is bare....

Trapped. We need to get out of here.We know it’s not safe to stay.We see the ocean creeping closer and closer to us every day.We know it’s going to reach us very soon, and then what?Trapped.I should have left on the boats with everyone else.I could have sailed away from this awful nightmare. I feel so much anger that I couldn’t.I have to stay and look after her, don’t I?Trapped. Our entire existence is this tiny island. Our heritage, our culture, everything we have ever known. Our family has never...

The greenhouse. That’s my fondest memory with you, spending afternoons spraying tomatoes with water in the greenhouse under your watchful eye. That’s my only memory with you that I know for certain is my own, and I cherish it.The rest however, I am not sure are memories. It’s become hard to distinguish between what I remember and what’s been told to me, or what I saw in a picture.I know that you were always kind and gentle. You were a gentle giant to me, always moving so slowly and peacefully in...

When you look at the ocean, what do you see? More importantly perhaps, what do you hear?I bet you don't hear a deafening crescendo of noise, so powerful that it distorts your vision, causing you immense pain and potentially resulting in loss of hearing altogether. That is what the marine life within our oceans is currently experiencing with noise pollution from shipping traffic and ocean exploration. These have severe impacts on marine creatures’ ability to hear and navigate. So what’s causing the...

My dearest Earth,It’s been a long time since we’ve spoken! I hope you’re doing well. I know things have been really tough for you lately so I just wanted to check in, but I hope you’re hanging in there and coping with it all.I’ve been so busy lately finishing up my University year that I haven’t had much time to offer you my full support and to really offer my services to you, so I am sincerely sorry about that. It’s crazy how much life gets in the way sometimes. I’m here now, though, and I’m re...

“If a tree falls in a forest and nobody's around to hear it, does it make a sound?”Yes, it does.Just because you didn’t hear the giant structure come crashing to the ground, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. You may be oblivious to it, but it took place.Just like how being oblivious to the true scale that deforestation is occurring around our planet doesn’t mean it’s not occurring. You may not have heard the impact of 15 billion trees last year falling to the ground, but they fell nonetheless.Trees...

Ever so carefully, he lowers himself down onto the ice-cold bed that awaits him for the night. The mattress made of concrete won’t afford him even one hour of peaceful sleep, and his blanket won’t block out the freezing chill that will creep through his bones and consume his entire body. The noise of the streets is deafening. Sirens blaring, car engines revving, people shouting, music blasting, animals howling. He buries his head into his jacket in an attempt to silence the pandemonium and to le...

I used to read a book a day. Once I had picked it up and read the first sentence, I would be captivated. I would carry it around with me and not stop until I had reached the very end. I used to write in my diary. I would unleash all of my inner thoughts and feelings into a book where only I would be able to see them. I would read back over years of experiences and emotions and get the chance to re-live them. I used to write lyrics. Whenever I heard a lyric that I liked I...
