“If a tree falls in a forest and nobody's around to hear it, does it make a sound?”Yes, it does.Just because you didn’t hear the giant structure come crashing to the ground, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. You may be oblivious to it, but it took place.Just like how being oblivious to the true scale that deforestation is occurring around our planet doesn’t mean it’s not occurring. You may not have heard the impact of 15 billion trees last year falling to the ground, but they fell none...

Ever so carefully, he lowers himself down onto the ice-cold bed that awaits him for the night. The mattress made of concrete won’t afford him even one hour of peaceful sleep, and his blanket won’t block out the freezing chill that will creep through his bones and consume his entire body. The noise of the streets is deafening. Sirens blaring, car engines revving, people shouting, music blasting, animals howling. He buries his head into his jacket in an attempt to silence the pandemonium and t...

I used to write in my diary. I would unleash all of my inner thoughts and feelings into a book where only I would be able to see them. I would read back over years of experiences and emotions and get the chance to re-live them. I used to write lyrics. Whenever I heard a lyric that I liked I...

Every day, the journey seems longer and longer. Some days it seems I will never make it to the well. The ground has been scorched, like the earth was set on fire from above. The life has drained away. My whole body aches, the soles of my feet feel like they have been worn until there is nothing left. But I do this for my hayat. My saada. Every day, the water is less and less. I must stretch my body further down the well in order to reach relief....

When asked, “What do you want to do in life? What are your career aspirations? Why did you decide to do that?”, I simply say “I want to change the world.” It seems like quite a generic and vague answer, but surely that’s the best answer anyone could possibly give? My name’s Katie, I’m 21 years old and I grew up in south London (UK) in a suburban town with the bustling city of London to the north of me and the rolling countryside of Surrey to the south. From a...

Environmental science has never been something that is well communicated to the general public. Science in general seems to be perceived by the majority of people as “boring”…and environmental science in particular is brushed aside as being rubbish or not relevant, spread by “tree-huggers” and “hippies”. After recent events (in particular Brexit and Trump’s election victory), it has occurred to me that people do not seem to care about the environment. Of course...
