“You’re too paranoid,” my brother told me once.I had panicked because it seemed like the man behind us had been following us.“Why are you always so worried?” He asked, laughing softly.I had gripped his arm when the car driving beside us had slowed down to our pace.“You really need to relax,” he said one day.I had been fidgeting in my seat ever since the man sat right next to me on the subway when the rest of the train was empty.“What’s the point?” He pushed, as we crossed the street. There had be...

I've tried promising myself that I'd stop writing. The pay isn't enough, I tell myself. You're not even good at it, I tell myself. But promises aren't always kept, And I've gotten very good at breaking this one. So instead of a promise, I made a deal. I'll stop writing when the words stop calling out for me. I'll stop writing when my heart stops calling back.

I’ve been told there’s art in engineering. Designing buildings and structures. Discussing aesthetics before you even get your hands on your first blueprint. But this isn’t the art I’ve been craving. This isn’t the art you find in words. He stared at the academic awards that lined the shelves in my room. He glanced at the certificates from the mathematics competitions. I explained to him that from the age of ten, I’ve had a future set for me carved in stone. Carved in mathematics,...

A mother’s love is sunlight, Passing through her daughter’s stained glass windows. The colors cast around inside of her, Sparking beauty, Fueling warmth. A mother’s love is warmth itself, Where her daughter finds a home. But a mother cannot house her forever, Days come when her daughter must find another home. But home is where the heart is, And my mother’s heart is mine.

The burning, The singeing, The breaking, The rape joke. The boys at my school make them, Grins plastered across their faces. It’s fine, It’s just a joke, It makes them laugh. But the lights in their eyes, Don’t quite make up, For the fear inside of me. The fear inside of every woman, Who’s had to walk alone in the night, In the day. In the park, In the city. Some in their own homes. But it’s alr...

If only humans loved the way they hated. Passionately, Intensely, With fire, With everything they’ve got. Without paying attention to whether or not they should, Without thinking too much. With a passion to try to make others see this person, In the passionate way that they do. If only humans hated the way they loved, Rarely.

As the infamous Coachella season approaches, the term “cultural appropriation” catches the attention of the media worldwide. There’s been a bit of confusion about the term among those who don’t fully understand what it is and why it offends people. So why does it upset so many people when a white person wears dreads? Why does it bother people to see white people playing people of color in movies? Why can’t people just let culture be shared or celebrated? When a black person wea...

I tried to heal. I put lemon juice in my hair and on my skin, Praying to my creator that this would lighten it. I would feel myself burning, When the girl next to me had eyes so much nicer than my brown ones. I tried to heal. But I have begun to see the light, Begun to see the beauty in the things I could not heal, To love the skin that I’ve been told has been marred, By the color my creator painted me with. I hope my creator did...

When I attempted to join my school’s academic team in fifth grade, I saw that the team was made up entirely of boys. “Are you sure you belong here?” The teacher asked me, genuinely concerned that I had gotten lost and wandered into the wrong classroom. I joined the team, if you were wondering, and ending up winning an award for an academic competition’s individual portion. The man handing me the award stopped as he took a moment to scan me and my team, noticing that I was the onl...
