Legionella has become issue of the day everywhere in my country: Portugal. At the moment the portuguese news have recorded about 302 confirmed cases of Legionella. Legionella bacteria caused 9 deaths here. This outbreak of legionella is the third largest ever in the world. We can contract this disease in the shower, or to use lavatory, for example, at public swimming pools or even through the air coming from the centralized air conditioning apparatus. The infection is transmitt...

Earth is a beautiful living planet of the Universe as the common habitat of more than 7 billion human population & millions of species of biodiversity. Our Earth provides us with food, shelter & with most of our requirements. Despite unavoidable free services provided by earth to humans we are not being able to pay off her kindness to us. Rather we humans are being cruel to our Earth by our selfish activities. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every...

Healthy living for most people is an option that only “sports people” get to enjoy. For most of us, jogging on Sundays and eating salad twice a week is already good enough to look after our bodies. However the more we grow and the more committed we are to academic or professional goals the less time we take to actually be healthy. This thought came to my mind because I recently went to the doctor and went out so happy that I wondered how was it possible for me to call gover...

“I’m happy to see my dad”, says Ibrahim* in a radiant smile. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for quite some time now”, explains the 9-year boy, holding tightly his brother in his arms. Ibrahim* and Abdul* are about to leave the UNICEF-supported Interim Care Center where they were living since they were discharged from the Ebola Treatment Center, one week ago. Their father, Hassan*, was still under treatment and both children had to wait until he recovered. This h...

-As you make steps further, menacing to engulf the human race pitilessly, we plead: Kindly spare us. - We are a flawed species, with different views. Be it a curse from God or our own negligence, we plead: Forgive us wholeheartedly. - Our tears bear testimony of the pain felt when seeing our dear ones dying, we plead: Soothe our ongoing cries. -You've shaken the world of many, taking them away with you, we plead: Blunt your axe please. - We are used to being bruised and pained,...

Tafala* is sitting outside the ‘high-risk area’ of the Ebola Treatment Unit in Kenema, Eastern region, a hotspot in Sierra Leone. Greeting visitors with a big smile, she slowly start explaining. “I have lost my parents, all my family died because of Ebola. Only the children survived so far. Two of my brothers recovered and were discharged, their blood tests came negative. They’re staying with our auntie, waiting for us: two others boys (6 and 2), Awa* (one year) and I a...

I recently watched a very interesting documentary film by the producer of An Inconvenient Truth called Fed Up that seeks to highlight the obesity epidemic in the US and the problems related to processed foods and their sugar quantity. Several important lessons can be learned from the documentary including but not limited to "all calories are not created equal", "calories in does not equal calories out" and "congress says pizza, french fries and tomato paste are all vegetables"....

Waste management practices and proper disposal seem to be a challenge in Solwezi district of North-Western Province in Zambia. From rubbish pits at home and piles of paper dumped outside offices and shops to litter thrown out of moving vehicles and heaps of rubbish in the streets. Even though they are sometimes cleared or picked up, it still poses a health hazard for people living or worning near these areas as they act as a host for bacteria and other diseases like cholera. The pr...
