Michael Deng was born in Panyagoor Village in South Sudan in 1989 at the height of the civil war between the North and South. At the tender age of 5, Deng unlike other children who play with toys, already knew how to hold and use an AK47 gun (Kalachnikov) that he was supposed to use to help protect his family and his father’s livestock from the enemy. The war that lasted decades in Sudan before the South successfully seceded from the North left him scarred just like many Sout...

On the second day,...

It’s January 2014, we are still in the beginning of this year. But it’s really sad to know that there are too many bad things that are happening around this time in Indonesia. We have discussed "Disaster Relief" as our debate topic about a month ago. Now, we will talk about some disasters occurring in Indonesia. The first natural disaster occurred in September 2013 which was the eruption of Mt. Sinabung in North Sumatra, Indonesia. State volcanologist Surono said, “The 2,...

Filming and editing were non-stop on the last 2 days of the workshop. On the 4th day, we started out by driving to Baqa’a camp. Baqa’a began as a refugee camp in 1968 for Palestinians who left the West Bank and Gaza Strip during the 1967 Arab Israeli War. What were once tents are now concrete shelters, and the camp feels more like a town. Our first film shoot was for Maram, an 18-year old who has already been married and divorced. She was very open about expressing this...

Filming, filming, filming. We only filmed 1 video on the 2nd day and have 16 more to film over the next 2 days. So the day starts off with a busy schedule of back to back shoots. First up is Rosh (19). He emigrated from Iraq in 2003 with his family and has tried hard to keep his spirit and identity. He believes everything has a start and an end, and that you should remain true to yourself no matter where you are. Because of his strong ideas of moving forward, we decided to film h...

The second day of the OneMinutesJr. workshop brought more talking and idea development. The participants of this workshop have a lot to say and were getting to the core of their ideas (the ones that really convey something personal still takes some time). Many times we delve deeper with youth to share something very close to their hearts. Yesterday, the focus of one young woman’s story was trying to be perfect and fulfilling expectations. We asked her to think more about it fro...
