“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” –Barrack Obama The 5th of December is celebrated every year as the International Volunteers Day by the United Nations. It is a day in which volunteers and volunteerism is celebrated and recognized in all its facets. As a volunteer, I would...

Adolescents are shaping humanity's present and future. Depending on the opportunities and choices they have during this period in life, they can enter adulthood as empowered and active citizens, or be neglected, voiceless and entrenched in poverty. When a girl becomes pregnant, her present and future change radically, and rarely for the better. Her education may end, her job prospects evaporate, and her vulnerabilities to poverty, exclusion and dependency multiply. STATISTICS...

In one of my child rights advocacy visits to secondary schools, I met the principal of a school who clearly prohibited me from talking to his students about the rights they have as children. We had an interesting discussion in which he gave some unsubstantial grounds against the enactment of the Child’s Rights Act. One of the grounds he stated was that the Child’s Rights Act incites rebellion amongst children against their parents and limits the amount of control parents have o...

I had an argument with a friend, a few days ago about the rights of a child. In the course of the argument i realised that most of the reasons he had against various rights of the child were based on ignorance rather than fact. For example he said prohibiting child labour promotes the idea that children have a right to disobey their parents and not do any work they dont feel like. This is so wrong and it prompted me to write this little piece because i believe there are many others...

This is a continuation of my last post "Lessons from Malala: Part 1" in which I talked about six learns I learnt from Malala Yousafzai’s story. Below is a discussion of more lessons I gathered from Malala. 7) Women should have the same access to education like men. I am yet to find a compelling argument that supports the idea that women should not have the same access to education like men. I have five sisters and I cannot imagine going to school while they stay at home. Accord...

On July 12, 2013, her 16th birthday, “the bravest girl in the world” Malala Yousafzai stood at the United Nations and delivered the speech of a lifetime to more than 500 young people aged 12-25 from around the world, with grace and compassion. It was extolled around the world as leaders, activists and celebrities acclaimed her for advocating for education for every child and every human being even for the children of those who almost took her life by putting a bullet in her h...

In a blessed country like Nigeria where majority of the leaders are unconcerned about the plight of the masses, especially the poor and downtrodden, my mind is filled with a lot of questions. DO WE ACTUALLY VOTE FOR WHO WE WANT? Nigeria has a history of elections rigging where our leaders are not a reflection of our votes but my primary concern here is not the issue of elections rigging but rather the candidates that are presented to us. IF WE WERE TO THOROUGHLY ASSESS ALL THOS...

Education is very important for every child whether boy or girl. It is sad that some communities still discriminate against the education of the girl child. About 57million children around the world are not going to school. The report, Children Still Battling to go to School, finds that 95% of the 28.5 million children not getting a primary school education live in low and lower-middle income countries – 44% in sub-Saharan Africa, 19% in south and west Asia and 14% in the Arab st...

Discrimination against children is illegal. Discrimination means the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. In other words, discrimination means treating people differently, negatively or adversely without any reasonable justification. People should not be placed at a disadvantage simply because of their racial and ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation. Discr...
