Many of us believe that we are doing the best we can for the society with the limited resources we have. But can resources ever be a limitation to the amount of work that we can do? Siragu is a school in the rural areas of North Chennai and I wish to tell you about how I was inspired upon visiting them. They not only use innovative methods of teaching but also utilise their resourcs sustainably. But apart from these, the most important point about the school is that all the s...

Our visit to the Kolapakkam Government High School near our school, Lalaji Memorial Omega International School, was truly an eye-opener. We had a chance to interact and get to know the children from rural areas. We observed the school to be a piece of ground with about 4-5 small blocks scattered around. The medium of teaching is Tamil, our regional language. The government provides uniforms, school bags, footwear, geometry and pencil boxes, notebooks and textbooks and an atlas...

We all know that education is a basic human right. The Right to Education Act in India describes the importance of free and compulsory education for all children between the ages 6 and 14, regardless of caste, creed, sex, religion etc. This includes differently-abled children. These children are, to an extent, receiving this education. But the quality of the education often isn’t good enough for them. Also, many schools do not have the necessary infrastructure to support these ch...

Educating the minority groups is an essential part in the process of ensuring that the Right to Education is fulfilled. This is especially important in the case of Tribal groups, who are the oldest inhabitants of the country. Due to their unique culture and tradition, they often isolate themselves from the rest of the country. This has adversely affected national integration and also made them more susceptible to exploitation by the dominant groups. The following is a case stud...

I get to school and find out that I’m a part of a United Nations Video Conference and have been given an opportunity to make a difference in the world. I was excited, but the first thing that came to my mind was “me, make a difference.... how on earth can an individual do that.... I CAN’T”. This happened 10 days ago. But now after a lot of group discussions and research, I’ve realised how much difference I can make as a member of society. We have looked up many case stu...

Education is a right- if not a legal right, at least a human and moral right. Therefore, the phrase "Human Rights and Education", which is a very common one, becomes quite interesting. Why should "Human rights" and "Education" be written separately? Does the phrase not become repetitive, tautological? The phrase shows that there is a connection between education and other human rights. Education is perhaps the best way to tell people what their legal rights are. Knowing one's rig...

Caught in an eddy of modern technologies, several communities have started to witness a bellicose between traditional and modern knowledge. Rational belief is considered to be the opposite of traditional knowledge by many. However, modern education is only an evolution of traditional indigeneous knowledge. For example, modern trigonometry had not evolved in a single day or due to the efforts of an individual. Its origin can be traced right form the time of Varamihira. He (Varamih...

We have all individually identified many problems with our society, but the real question is can we do something about it? And if so, how? The students of our school, astonished by the problems of gender imparity in education decided to help at least one girl acquire quality education. What started out as a simple idea slowly progressed into an actual plan of action. The student leaders of the school got together and discussed thoroughly various ideas that would help collect money...
