This is my last month in the VOY internship. I have had an amazing time for the past six months; I have met some pretty amazing friends and interacted intellectually with a few great minds from Africa and beyond. I have had strong critics in my posts, and had my stories read by so many people, I have pushed my mind to greater heights, interrogated concepts and beliefs, shared opinions and inspirations and most of all I have been able to discover some truth in my quest. I have exper...

Recently, in my country, there has been a campaign geared towards encouraging young people from Kenya and East Africa to embrace farming as a profession under the banner of “farming is cool”. The campaign encompassed using one of Kenyas young and hip celebrity (Juliani) who has a very large following doing a tour and exposing successful farming ventures by other young people. It also involves Amiran (main Sponsors) promoting their merchandise to the audience. I cannot authorita...

I am from Kenya. I come from Kenya. I identify with Africa as a continent of origin. Africa is not a country. 54 countries, totally distinct ways of life. I have no idea what language they speak in Zimbabwe (unless I Google it). I have no idea of the history of Nigeria, unless I refer to my history class notes. I hear majority of Tunisians are white. Ask me about Congo? (first give me a minute to research). I am African and we have internet here. We have schools and classes. We hav...

When I settled on doing this article, I did not anticipate the effort that would be required in developing the necessary arguments and content. I had underestimated the amount of time and research I would need to be able to justify the absence or presence of an African Identity. Regardless, I had to do it; I considered it extremely necessary. Sometimes in February, a prominent Kenyan writer and African icon Binyavanga Wainaina came out; the reactions in the Kenyan media as well...

Of late, I have been deeply interested in two fundamental development issues in my country; one of them is the commitment of my government to addressing youth unemployment and the other is in conventional development approaches, especially on their effectiveness and whether there is need for us to shift to other more innovative models like say, cash transfer or social entrepreneurship. A policy analyst who I respect a lot named Kwame Owino once said that our government had a la...

Do you ever wonder why we bother to go to school? Ever ask yourself why it was necessary for you to go through all those many years of classes? Ever think about how it all started? And if it were upon you to decide, would you do it the same way or would you want it done differently? We were all born into a system. A system that has been structured to make us spend almost half of our lives learning how to do this or that. We learn how to execute procedures, how to treat diseases...

Sometime last week I happened to attend a forum discussing the very tragic South Sudan conflict. My attendance was mainly out of curiosity, I wanted to understand why people in my neighboring country were maiming each other and displacing hundreds of thousands of people. My interest was further fueled by the fact that the speakers were South Sudanese nationals and also present was an official from the mediation team[1]. I was also deeply interested in knowing how a very young count...

Should we participate for the sake of participation or should it be because we have something very key to say? Are the issues we are raising any different from what the older generation is raising? Do we need to be involved if what we are raising similar to what is being raised by them? The recent clamor for youth participation can almost be compared to the fight for women involvement in influencing development during the 19th century. Young people are coming out in large numbe...

If I was Ban for a month, my key priorities would be to eradicate global hunger and extreme poverty, end all brutal killings associated with power and politics and then hold dialogue with terrorists; try and understand what their deal is and find a way of ending their unacceptable behaviors. So if suddenly I found myself at the helm of the United Nations with all the power and influence that come with being the UNSG (United Nations Secretary General), I would make sure the above me...
