“The road is blocked. You cannot go any further, please come through the other way,” a 7-year old child declared solemnly. “But I have to drop off my daughter. She is going to be late for her office. Please let us pass!” my father requested. “No, Sir!” this time another child spoke, and sounded like they were coming-of-age. “Can you please look at my card?” my father handed out his service card. “Hmm…”, the first child began to check. After he was satisfied, h...

“This will take another 5 days to get ready”, Sher Muhammad tells with a beam in his eyes. “And this is going to be a brand new addition to my fleet”, he affirms with a voice echoing of resolve. I am present at a boat-making training organized by WWF-P and DFID for local CBO members in Kot Addu – a town badly hit by 2010 floods. Sher Muhammad, a practiced fisher, has arranged wood for a 16-feet wide boat whereas three other members – the trainees – are investing labor...

One fine morning, the school assembly was in progress. All students and teachers were solemnly standing while National Anthem was playing loudly in the background. The sight was serene and calm. Suddenly there came a sound; a huge truck appeared to approach the nearby plot and then spread the most unbearable stench; penetrating each nose, afflicting every mind and permeating all nooks and corners. The assembly hastily dispersed, everyone running towards the classroom; breathing with wide-open mo...

I smiled while passing by a board placed on a metal basket. This basket is set in a quiet corner of a local Convent school where I go everyday after a tiring day at the bank. Forgotten books, bags, pencils, lunch boxes, water bottles and sometimes Barbie dolls anxiously await their possessors in that peaceful place. And, judging each evening from the content of the basket, students come often to retrieve their belongings. Sometimes, I stand near the basket picturing little angels’ dreams an...

Source: <> “I wanted to help my parents but didn’t know how to go about it”, said Naila while working immaculately on a beautiful carpet on loom. “We were poor and were heavily into debt. Then I started attending the center and lending a helping hand”, she added. I met Naila during a visit to a training center in a less-developed village of Southern Punjab where women were acquiring carpet weaving skills and were paid cash for their work to support their families. Their product...

“A painful phrase written on sand by a small boy who lost his parents in flood, “Dear River, I will never forgive you even if your waves touch my feet a million times””. It was a text message sent to me by my friend; illustrating grief, misery, pain and personal loss of flood-stricken, in some measure. The small boy tried to put in words his hatred towards the river; a river which once provided water to his crops, activity to his leisure hours and scenic beauty to his surroundings, all o...

The other day I felt deeply moved after coming across a cute little girl while on my way back home. That individual made me realize how for granted we take certain things in life which for other make a critical difference at times. They say children daydream all the day but there are amongst them whose eyes are bedazzled by the blare of ruthless realities around at an early age, rendering them unable to dream; perhaps for life. And this one harsh reality I truly took in that evening. I was on...
