Oil Spill Anniversary
Today is exactly one year since the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst in the US history. To commemorate this terrible event the Guardian did a detailed Q&A on its Environment blog which answers important questions, such as why did it take so long to stem the oil flow and whether BP's safety standards were adequate.
AP talked about family members of those 11 employees killed in the incident. The disaster began on the night of April 20, 2010 with the explostion on the Deepwater Horizon rig. 2 days later the rig collapsed triggering the spill of 206 million gallons of oil over the next 85 days.
The Globe and Mail says that the dolphins are still dying and the fish in the Gulf is deformed.
What can we do to prevent catastrophes like this from ever happening again?
