Indigenous people in West Papua are suffering as their land and forests are exploited by timber and palm oil companies. West Papua has immense natural resources, which has encouraged logging and deforestation. Indonesia took control of the west part of Papua New Guinea in 1969. Amnesty International estimates that more than 400,000 Papuans have since been killed.
