I VOLUNTEER TO MAKE AN IMPACT

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global challenge and every level of societal participation is encouraged to bear great responsibility and practice the duty of care principle in ensuring the health and overall well-being of others.

The COVID-19 pandemic has in some way thought us about life's values - the truly important things. All accumulated material glories seem not to matter much as the pandemic is proof of our vulnerability and a mockery of our false thoughts that we can control all our moves. It has made a joke of our belief in the extensive laws of feasibility and viability studies to make near assumptions and succeed. It has altered our ego and bruised our pride - it has forced us back to the shells of our conscience that we took for granted.

I was privileged to visit some communities in Lagos Nigeria and sensitise them on healthy practices for living through COVID-19. The innocence in their questions made my heart melt. Here I am upset that I hear the same story everyday about washing my hands, using a face mask, social distancing and the likes, whereas a group of persons are listening to me with enthusiasm, eager to fight this war as disadvantaged as they are. The palliatives we took there left smiles that lasted till my waves were no longer visible. On my way home I became haunted by thoughts of people embezzling funds and I wondered - to what end? We need a coalition to fight this war, those funds will sustain lots of disadvantaged persons if they were in the right hands.

The pandemic is a reawakening - an embrace of love and unity, of contentment and sustainability not just for an individual but at a societal level. The pandemic is a revolution that will change our world forever.

I volunteer out of love because I find fulfillment in service to humanity. It is the fuel that helps me excel in every other undertaking.
