The twenty-first century is a rapidly evolving world unique to itself. The citizens encounter unprecedented challenges and appalling concepts, forcing humanity to surrender itself to doubt. We live in a self-absorbed, on-the-go world, quickly succumbing to addiction and obsession, oppression and aversion. It’s no lie when they say we lose sight of the things that truly matter. Tethered to the mentality of “it is what it is”, we go blind to the simple pleasures of our everyday lives. We focus, instead, on the burdens that so easily weigh us down. We’ve accustomed ourselves to a world where gratitude is an unknown word and happiness and relaxation are yearned dreams. But one lesson humanity can take from this global crisis is that the little things that we freely neglect will always matter more, for all great art is gratitude.

Influenced by the digital age, we’re taught and shown to believe that the amount of material goods is what constitutes one’s worth and the need to always have more and better is the only thing that will bring inner peace. Think again. How many of us have really glanced or given importance to the materialistic goods during this time? This belief was formed to divert use from true bliss – ourselves and our loved ones. Gratitude had become a forgotten art. We lived life through what we believed to be a clear lens when it really was stained and cracked glass, the pieces of which poked us through the journey. During this time, we’ve turned to our loved ones for support and comfort. We’re slowly learning to pick up the fundamentals of gratitude.

We’re learning the beauty of our broken world and we’re learning the importance of personal prosperity. We’re learning to be grateful for being here, right at this moment, for being the youngest we’ll ever be and the oldest we’ve ever been. We’re learning what it means to love and be loved, to appreciate the luxury of breathing. We’re learning to be this lost, confused, happy and free – so just breathe. If we can find gratitude for our hearts that still beat, for the tears that we shed over good and bad, for the sun, moon and stars that rise in the east and set in the west, for the silent prayers, rustling branches and our existence, we learn to find the rose amongst thorns. If we can find gratitude for it all, our life becomes art.
