How to submit a blog post

If you have something to say, say it!

Voices of Youth (VOY) is a platform that publishes blog posts that are submitted from a wide variety of young people from all over the world.

Anybody is invited and encouraged to create blog posts and share them with the VOY community. Blog posts can be about any topic (social, economic, political, recreational…) and be submitted in any format (articles, videos, reviews, stories, interviews, poems…) – there is no limit to your creativity!

VOY quality requirements

To maintain a certain quality standard for our readers, VOY will only publish blog posts that meet the following quality requirements:

  1. Your blog post is about your perspective on something
It doesn’t matter whether it is a serious issue or a fun issue, a global issue or a local issue, make sure to express your personal thoughts.
  2. Your blog post has a coherent structure
Whatever the format of your blog post may be, make sure that your post has an introduction part where you introduce the issue, a main body of text where you develop the issue and a conclusive section where you wrap it all up.
  3. Your blog post is captivating
Make an effort to tell a compelling story to VOY readers. There are many ways to make a post powerful – try to write something inspirational, funny, sad, uplifting, troubling, philosophical or critical.
  4. Your blog post is clear
Make sure that your text not only makes sense to you, but also to your readers. This means that sometimes you’ll have to explain details that seem obvious to you, but not to the readers.
  5. Your blog post is neither too long nor too short
Find the right length for your post. Make sure that your blog post is at least 200 words and maximum 1000 words. Poems are an exception.
  6. Your blog post uses proper referencing
We do not expect you to reference every line of your text – please don’t! However, if you mention facts or numbers in your article, indicate the source by hyperlinking one or several words of your text, linking to the website where one can find the mentioned facts or numbers.
  7. Spelling & grammar matters!
We know that you might not be writing in your first language when you submit to Voices of Youth. That’s okay, but it is important that your post is readable and can be understood by others. Good grammar, spelling and punctuation are crucial. Writing in simple, short sentences can help communicate your message clearly. Always proofread your work before submitting a post! You might also want to ask a friend or a teacher to check your post before you submit – or use a free online programme to spot any errors.

General VOY engagement guidelines

At Voices of Youth, we encourage young people to speak their minds. Voices of Youth is in line with the main principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, including the right to freedom of expression, as outlined in Article 13 of the convention. Voices of Youth is a community that is open to and welcomes young people from around the world. Due to the diversity of our user base, Voices of Youth aims to create an environment where any young person feels comfortable, no matter their nationality, gender, cultural background, religion, sexual orientation or political conviction.

This is why anyone engaging on or with Voices of Youth is expected to respect the VOY core values: positivity, openness, respect, inclusiveness, dialogue, collaboration and constructiveness.

Furthermore, any user who engages on Voices of Youth - be it through posts or comments - is expected to respect the following VOY content guidelines:

  • Your content does not put your safety at risk.
  • Your content is not discriminatory, racist, xenophobic, sexist, profane or propagating violence.
  • Your content is not defamatory, malicious, abusive or inciting against an individual, group, government, country, religion or sect.
  • Your content does not make generalizations about or general allegations against an entire group, country, religion or sect.
  • Your content can be on current or historical events, as long as the focus is on your personal experiences and doesn’t violate the points above.
  • Any mention of facts, events, situations, practices or statistics need to be backed by reputable and credible sources.
  • When using images, only use images that belong to you. If you use images from the internet, make sure that you have the permission to use them and credit the owner.
  • Your content should be original, and should not already be published anywhere else.

We’ve also developed guidelines that will help you in dealing with sensitive topics:

  • Voices of Youth is all about young people sharing inspiring, original insight and opinion from across the globe – it’s not a competition of who can write the most courageous piece. Therefore, when choosing the topics of your posts, carefully think what you want to write about and how it may be received by readers.
  • If you are unsure if a topic is too sensitive to write about, we encourage you to discuss with family and friends the pros and cons of writing a potential post. This will help you decide if and how to approach a difficult subject before you start writing.
  • If you choose to write about a sensitive topic, avoid focusing solely on specific individuals and making allegations. Make sure to focus on facts, which should always be backed by sources that can be verified. This means that proper research is crucial. Only use sources that are credible – it’s better not to use a source and not to make a point, than making a point that’s based on a dubious source.
  • If you choose to write about a sensitive topic try to present the various views on the topic. Even though blogging gives you the freedom to focus on your own view, when writing about controversial topics it is important to show that alternate views exist and why people have these views.
