As I was writing my first post for the Voices of Youth Blogging Internship, my father collapsed in the kitchen due to a stroke. The first month of my internship was filled with uncertainty as I struggled to cope with the whole situation. I distinctly remember how I tried to forget everything and focus on what I was writing. It was painstaking to write, but it gave me a sense of normality, even if it was for a brief period of time.Gradually my father was recovering well and I ventured out of my b...

*BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*I force my heavy eyelids open ever so slightly, and lean over to smack the alarm clock. My head is pounding. 5 AM. Only 3 hours sleep in total. But I have to get up and get going.I drag my body to the edge of the bed, and contemplate the day ahead. It seems like a lifetime will pass before I can return to this bed and rest once again, but it's just another day to tackle.I wake my baby, dress him and carry him downstairs for breakfast. I open the cupboard, but inside is bare....

‘You didn’t even graduate high school’, ‘You don’t have the necessary qualifications for this job’, ‘Do you have anything else to wear than a deel (traditional Mongolian clothing)?’, ‘We don’t employ people from the countryside’, ‘You don’t belong here, go back to where you came from’.It was not 18 year-old Dashka’s fault that he didn’t graduate high school, did not have the necessary skills to be employed in an urban environment, or that he was wearing his only piece of nice clothing. His famil...

I am writing this letter to you because I needed to get my current thoughts and feelings on pen and paper. Wait, on a computer and keyboard. Moving on. I hope that when you read this letter you will understand, accept, and love your past, present, and future. Here I go.I am not ready. Things are uncertain. I don’t know if father will live another year. I’m afraid that I can’t keep mother from drowning in her sorrow. I don’t know if I can become the person I want to be. I don’t know what the heck...

Ever since starting the VOY blogging internship, I have jumped into every opportunity I could get to learn more about the environmental initiatives in Mongolia and abroad. Through numerous expeditions, conferences, and panel discussions I met many young people who were full of energy and drive to make a difference. On the other hand, I was frustrated by the lack of access to information in this field. It was as if the government and related environmental organizations didn’t want us to know the...

“What do you want to be when you grow up? What do you want to study in university?” I asked my cousin who is in her senior year of high school.“I don’t know,” she said.“That’s alright. Most of us don’t know what we want to do with the rest of our lives at this age. So is there any school subject you particularly enjoy?,” I asked.“No,” she replied.“Any activities that interest you?” I inquired.“None I can think of,” she answered nonchalantly.I was baffled. Here was my cousin who didn’t have much...

So I spent Earth Day 2017 watching “Before the Flood” by Leonardo DiCaprio and I was once again hit by a sense of urgency. In a documentary showing his three year journey to all the corners of the globe exploring the impacts of climate change, Leo DiCaprio captivated audiences with hard hitting facts, his brutally honest reactions, and an amazing soundtrack.I had the chance to watch “Before the Flood” at a private screening on Earth Day. Through a public Facebook Event, young environmental activ...

What drives me nuts is the fact that people have so much capacity for kindness but choose to ignore or suppress it in fear of being hurt. If we try just a little bit to practice kindness in our every day actions and look at life at least one degree through a love lens, I truly believe the world can be a better place. I am trying to do so right now.During my nine month presidency at my Rotaract club, our club members had implemented and taken part in over 100 small and large scale projects and ac...

What if you were invited on a bus ride without having the slightest idea of its passengers and its destination? To board the bus, you have to follow only one rule: to respect and love everyone regardless of age, race, gender, or sexual orientation. This is the concept of the “Love Bus”, a performance event and tour around Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia organized by the LGBT Centre in collaboration with their resident artist Nathan Stoneham and volunteers. Thirty participants, one of which was me, were sel...

I love exploring and learning about new things, the environment being my next endeavor. Having participated in projects at the UN and Rotary in Mongolia, I saw that everyone should educate themselves about the environment and move collectively towards protecting our planet. VOY blog is a great chance for me to learn with my fellow interns, practice my writing skills, and contribute to SDGs.
