How Strongly Can Social Media Influence and Control People’s Lives?
This is how the lack of reliable internet access affects me… and my community
We are all in this together
So, this a quotation that we say in my country, Lebanon, and which means “we are all in this together”. As you know, COVID-19 has spread all over the world, and that made me think that no matter how much we can be different in our different countries, cultures, habits, thoughts… This situation reunites us and shows us that we are not THAT different. The virus can affect me as it can affect any other person around the world! We are all in this together, so we must take care of each other, be kind, be helpful, cheer each other up, and so it can be a first step to the end of discrimination and a...
No Country for Online advocacy
In the spawn of three months, grandparents learned how to use Zoom, professors that had been teaching since the last millennium had to learn forcefully about live-streaming and virtual conferences, and humanity realized that many daily activities can be done online. Technology had been swallowing slowly our daily routines during the last decade; however, it took an accelerated and imposed growth due to this pandemic This change to online-based society seems easy and even unavoidable in the so-called High-Income countries. But Low-Middle Income countries got stuck in a slow development, where...

To the, Tunisian dreams, scraper… (part 2)
*** A gun to the eye brought a tear to the heart and took the life of my dearest sister. O thou who brought pain to suffice her spleen. If the life was not convenient for you, from the beginning, of your mania you equipped yourself, to return my sun, to me darling, so blackened. A last step towards life? Spread out for a last moment, to breathe this air? Smile at life one last time? My so utopian hope, did not make possible the vision of my fathers. In the media, the charge touched them, one with the other, intent upon misfortune. What seemed to be such a wonderful day was not so wonderful now...
Might not have meant it
Every drop that falls down paints the bathroom floor red You might not have meant it, but they ended up dead. Each thought you spoke aloud, weighed heavy on their heart Unbeknownst to you it started tearing them apart. You've always made these jokes, but never thought of what could come If all the hate you spread around, finally turns their hearts numb. You keep spouting out your words and believe that they'll be fine To then suddenly seem surprised when you've pushed them over the line. Oh no it was only a joke, they took it the wrong way I didn't really mean when I told them that they should...
UN International Girls in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Day
Today is the United Nations' International Girls in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Day, which is celebrated each year on fourth Thursday of April. So, this year, in 2020, we are celebrating this day on April 23. Why ICT is important? With the current COVID-19 situation, people are staying at homes for their safety. in this case, digital networks play a crucial role in maintaining peace. They allow us to keep in touch with each other, help medics treat the sick, and enable scientists to work together to develop a vaccine. ICT plays an important role in our daily lives, which we...
The Shattered Happily Ever After
At the age of 19, Malak got married. At that young age, she probably thought that she had found the love of her life – a man who would protect her, support her, and help her achieve her dreams. She probably thought that she had found her happily ever after. However, it did not take long for that dream to be shattered. A year after her marriage, Malak set herself on fire, as a result of the continuous abuse and violence inflicted by her husband and his family. Some sources report that it was Malak's husband who has set her on fire, while others say she decided to end her own life. Regardless of...
What you are not being told about the George Floyd protests
At first, I was reluctant to write an article about the current issue of the George Floyd protests, because I thought I was not informed enough to have an opinion. I therefore paid extreme attention to the unfolding events and what different activists and people at the fore front of these protests had to say and I was able to see what the media is missing yet is very important. First of all, the media is tainting the protests as violence filled protests. Which is not entirely the case and it is very disturbing that this is what the media is focusing on. Are they looting? Yes. Are they damaging...
#HateIsAVirus
Xenophobia and racism to the Asian community have increased massively since the start of the pandemic, causing misleading accusations to have triggered despicable actions that exceed humanity. In a world that is filled with so many beautiful cultures and races, it is devastating that some are overlooked and not accepted. Change is a basic principle that was supposed to happen centuries ago, now it is mandatory for it to be a lifestyle - normalized throughout the whole circumference of the planet. Every race is a piece of art, a formidable museum that will allow entrances once the visitors are...
The future of internet safety, reimagined
End violence!
It's sad to realize that quarantine has increased the violence worldwide. It's shocking to know that somebody is suffering now. It's unfair. Nobody deserves to live in fear. Please, don't break children and their lives into pieces. Don't destroy their future and the future of humanity.
Families Affected by Civil War
Recently, I read the book 'The Bite of the Mango' by Mariatu Kamara. This book is about the civil war of Sierra Leone that happened from 1991-2002. The author, Mariatu Kamara writes about her own life and the experience of having her arms cut off, thinking her family is dead, and then she has a baby, then her baby dies. A sponsor brings her to Canada, where she learns english and graduates from school and college. Then a few years later, the president of Sierra Leone wants to meet her so she goes back, sees her family, meets the president, returns to Canada and writes this book. I had some...
We Are Different
Angie Thomas said, “People like us in situations like this become hashtags, But they rarely get justice.” We are different. Yeah, that may be true, But let us review What we have gone through. Every other day I see on the news display How a black got beaten Or may have passed away. I find it funny How others thinks it’s okay Now tell me, if it was you You would make a case. Not too long ago, It happened again Someone was murdered Because of their melanin. Everyone is praying for this to end But here we are with another trend. A death is starting a movement, Since there is a lot of room left...
WWIII
War “A state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations”. So why does it feel as though I am living through World War Three? Crisis Brings out the true colors of a person We are Black and White Best and Worst Are our true colors War Is painting gray War Is when these two sides of us fight Whether it be against each other Or ourselves. Crisis Is the key out of the jail that hides our selfishness The bars that once contained it have crumbled Our selfishness will become the bullets that kill And that make a war a War We are fighting ourselves.
Living with Continuous Traumatic Stress in South Africa
I have lived in my current family home all my life. It’s in a moderate neighborhood with mostly average income and elderly families. But we are constantly being preyed on with regards to armed robberies and hijackings - this is true for many areas in SA. I would think in 17 years, we have had over 20 incidents. Yes, seriously. Car theft, armed robberies, hijackings, this has instilled a sense of hyper vigilance within every member of our household. My mom compares it to a soldier experiencing war that any noise or sound might trigger her into a past traumatic experience. The thing is...
