Close Yet Far Away; A Poem in Times of Social Distancing
You see the ray of sunshine. You hear the birds chirping. You feel your heart beating. You watch your limbs shifting. You want to go and feel the breeze, But you can not even do what your soul may please.
Mental Health & Isolation: How we can address mental health during the coronavirus pandemic
The year 2020 started off in panic. There was talk of a possible 3rd World War, then there was an outbreak of coronavirus in China. I never thought it’d reach America, but I was wrong. In fact, the United States is one of the nations most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Our economy is in free fall, people are in isolation waiting for government aid; all while cases of Covid-19 rise. Despite this, there’s another casualty of this pandemic – our mental health. There’s no doubt that uncertainty breeds paranoia, especially in adolescents. I personally started to feel different after my local...
The 3C Campaign to cheer our Frontliners
Hello Everyone! My name is Ayush and I’m in 7th grade. We all know that they are so many people out there on our frontlines trying to help combat COVID-19! These frontliners include doctors, nurses, hospital workers, police, firefighters, EMTs, first responders, restaurant workers, and so many more. Every second that they take to make our lives easier, means that they have one more second to get a risk of getting infected. Many of them go home to an empty house, afraid, and not able to see their family for weeks at a time. Many of our frontliners are at a high risk of getting depression. So...
A New Reality
Coronavirus. COVID-19. A global pandemic. A crisis that goes by countless names, from city to city, state to state, nation to nation. Plaguing the weak and targeting all with no remorse. No one saw this coming for two reasons, one we simply cannot predict the future, and two… we made a joke out of it. For weeks, months even, coronavirus was simply a subject on social media where memes were being made and a joke was made out of suffering. People were desensitized, people began to feel untouchable, that was of course until they were touched. Coronavirus does not discriminate. Being a high school...
Do Your Part
Making do by making art. We are not alone in this. Love each other from afar, pray for those who are sick and on the front lines, and continue to do your part. The best way I process my emotions is through making art, and I also wanted to share this piece to spread awareness and inspiration during these difficult times. Hope you enjoy!
Here's why racism is unhealthy.
The United States of America was founded on principles of equality, justice, and freedom on July 4th, 1776. However, it was also founded by white slave-owners who intentionally created a government with discriminatory laws and practices to ensure that they could continue to maintain racial superiority. After amendments to the U.S. constitution and centuries of struggle, which included a bloody civil war and a powerful civil rights movement, the effects of the institutional racism this country was founded upon are still very apparent in modern-day America. With the country in the middle of the...
The future of internet safety, reimagined
How The Coronavirus is Impacting Generation Z
When you hear about Generation Z, it’s always from the perspective that they’re “digital natives” and they “grew up with the internet at their fingertips.” But there’s a lot more to be said about this promising young group of individuals than the simple fact that they were the first generation born into a technological era. They’re also living, breathing human beings. They have emotions. Many are in the midst of sorting through their college careers. The first wave of older Gen Zers are even busy entering the workforce ...all in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. How the Coronavirus is...
Who you are
What scares me the most is ourselves— how we treat one another, how we perceive one another, and how we go about this world living as if we are truly different from one another. Many years ago, I found a quote on the cover of a prayer book— the entire world is a narrow bridge. Throughout my life, I have toiled to find meaning in these words, but to no avail. These simple seven words held such complexity that their significance remained elusive, compelling me into a state of frustration. It was only months ago that I discovered there is a second half to that quote— the essential thing is not to...
Covid-19 poem
Covid-19 isn’t any kind of flu It’s taking over our 2020 Social Media and all of our foes Are telling lies, they’re all just a hoax People take this as a joke But the worldwide death rate is 333,001 We are all struggling through this time The people believe this is a war People overreacting and acting like fools Fake lies like labs and other tools I just hope we have vaccinations No one knows why this is happening This is no one's fault, they say But every day there’s someone at the park It’s dark we just need the light We have seen some things we’ve seen that we all have sight Now...
Right Way during COVID -19
What is right in your mind and heart makes us do the right thing! During this time we should: - Maintain social distancing - must wear a mask - protect yourself
Using art and writing to express ourselves.
Art is a wonderful way of expressing ourselves. Writing is another good way of expressing ourselves as well. Those two mediums of self-expression is what I use personally to help express not only myself, but my emotions and my thoughts, especially during this pandemic. Doing so is a healthy way of coping and expressing our emotions and feelings. We can draw friends hanging out and playing with each other, and write about how we miss playing with our friends. We can paint raining skies to show our sadness, and journal about why we are feeling. I personally like to write about how I am feeling...
Why We Don't Vote
Ask me if I vote and I’ll tell you no. I’m told it’s important and necessary, yet I come from a city with strong views that appeal to mine anyways. Besides when I turned 18, I figured my vote wouldn’t even matter since the majority of the city/state see the world the way I see it. I’m a young person, I work, I pay bills, I go to school; I’m responsible. Yet aside from that, voting has always seemed pointless because there were many things that occurred in the time that I couldn’t vote (like Trump becoming president) that I did not approve of. Even now I do not feel like voting is the only or...
End Food Insecurity with "Foodle" and "FoodlePlus"
The stigma of the world - Hunger According to the latest data available by the United Nations, One in nine people does not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. Hunger is the greatest and totally avoidable stigma on the earth. Hunger and malnutrition are a greater threat to humans and even greater than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. It's estimated that almost 2 billion people worldwide suffer from at least a moderate level of food insecurity. In the most developed country, the United States, food insecurity is no less painful. One in six Americans goes to bed hungry...
Becoming The "American" Child
My South Asian culture is something that I have always cherished. The traditional folk music and dances, flavorful cuisines, and colorful festivities native to Kerala have always managed to mesmerize me ever since I was young. But at what cost was I finally able to start appreciating these aspects of my identity as a young Indian American? I remember laying down when I was younger, perched next to our Casio stereo CD player and listening to Indian music from my native language, Malayalam, while I would sing my heart out in random gibberish, thinking that I was reciting what I thought were the...
Home of the brave
Democracy settles beneath the pact between the bad guys and the businessman it's chocked by hate and by man-made mistakes it has dust all around its edge Come one don’t let it go to waste, You’ve seen the Carpenter hills and the Arizona lakes You’ve seen the way a mother works to pay the rent it’s in the U.S.A where dreams are made Oh, democracy won’t you wake up and find us again? Looking at the railroads and trains it’s the place where technology bolted to wake and it’s here the man grow greedy and they search for fame but I know an American household by the union and a hard workday, Oh...
Patient Survivors Need Help with Their Mental Health.
Worldwide around 970 million people have mental health illnesses, ranging from anxiety to dysthymia. These same illnesses are responsible for around 14.3% of deaths or 8 million deaths each year, and the numbers continue to skyrocket. Despite the heartache from these numbers, they are also valuable tools to demonstrate how prevalent mental health illnesses are in our world and to raise public awareness. We need to use these statistics to convey how rampant mental health problems are and advocate for our world’s well-being. Furthermore, we should take action and target predictable triggers to...
Technology Is Helping Us Reach the Stars… and Beyond
On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong landed on the moon and achieved the impossible - well, what seemed impossible at the time. United States President John F. Kennedy initiated the Apollo Program in May 1961, as he dreamed of the US successfully landing a man on the moon with a safe return. The Apollo Program had started almost from ground-zero. Their funds were very miniscule compared to the cost of manufacturing the necessary space equipment and technology - monitors, space suits, the shuttles themselves, and more. Scientists had minimal knowledge of the moon (and space in general) and the...
The Flint Water Crisis - Impact, solutions, and repercussions
Living the American nightmare is what the residents of Flint have been experiencing in the last few years, the water crisis that hit the city having long-term repercussions on the health of inhabitants, in severe cases even leading to deaths. When disaster hit, no one was prepared for the disappointing explanations and the course of action taken at the time, a poor decision-making process leading to a basic return to the middle ages for this once beautiful city in the United States. Some were lucky enough to not rely on the water treatment provided by the municipality, to begin with, but most...
