For the past several months, elephant owners in Kerala (India) have been protesting to lift the ban preventing Ramachandran, one of the State’s tallest and most popular captive elephants, from taking part in the Thrissur Pooram, an iconic festival in the State. Over the years, Raman, as he is lovingly called, has been a festival favourite, but was barred after he ran amok last February, killing two people and injuring several others.
