As a child, I was taught that I could save the planet by recycling, and that climate change – while an important topic – would not begin to affect the day-to-day lives of humans for a long time. But as a college student who has been alternating between a winter jacket and short-sleeved shirts as the temperature in my town jumps more than 30°F each day, I am becoming acutely aware of the fact that I will face catastrophic climate change effects in my lifetime. In fact, I have learned that climate change has already been wreaking havoc on ecosystems and economies for years. Indeed, it has...
I was once a kid. Taught to save the earth, Responsible for taking care of the environment, Trained to defend against destroyers. I am against the destroyer. But I became one. It's sad to think and see But I always remember, I was once that kid. We should learn from this mistake. And be the best adult on earth. There is still hope. To be the voice of the earth
They sit in a row yet we think of them as low, We disobey the line but think they are undisciplined in mind, Shouldn't we give them a bow For how they are kind. Gazing them graze green grass makes me feel enliven, As I think of, caring for them will pay back, As of now all crazy I am driven, By how we treat them, in fact. All I am mesmerized by the beauty they hold, Can only say it loud that they deserve much more, Shouldn't we mould - ourselves, for it's shouting "enough" from core. I see them below the sapphire, not between the iron, Still there is a fire, to see in the wild a lion.
A man made disaster of global scale, And with it, it's huge implications prevail Our greatest threat in thousands of years, Waiting on the horizon for us. A marginal rise in sea levels and millions displaced; Is it just the environment, or is it also you who is at stake? Us and our environment aren't two. How can you be oblivious to the destruction of me and you? The challenge before us - is bigger than any of us, But it requires - every single one of us. We don't have long before civilizations extinct Millions are already affected and billions are at risk. Can you sense a need of urgency...
Forests are where animals can breed But trees are all gone because of greed There must be something that we can still do But do you care about the things around you -Yang This inspired me because nature brings joy, and it transforms us. It’s is like magic. It is the most precious gift that God gave us and we treat our environment badly, putting trash all over the seas and in the grass. It is time for us to look deeper into taking care of our environment. If we don’t care for the environment, animals will have no homes. We won’t be able to eat and receive food. Life wouldn’t exist without our...
In reflecting on what has unfolded since January 2020, it is worthwhile to assess the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic can teach us about global action against climate change. We know that despite early claims of economic slowdown, decreasing carbon emissions were incorrect, and GHG emissions continue to rise at record-breaking levels. Parallels, however, between the global scale of COVID-19 and our climate crisis beg several questions about how democratic societies fare in times of crisis as effective mechanisms for upholding societal wellness. How have democratic societies responded to...
Following my non-formal education about human rights, education and climate changes in Africa, I decided to interview one young and brave climate activist from Uganda. Nyombi Morris is a 23-year-old Ugandan climate activist and social media manager for a climate justice nonprofit organization called Rise Up Movement. Find out more about Nyombi and his work by reading this interview and following him on his social media.
Flowers bloom only when the sky cries, Rainbows are colorful only when the sun shines bright, There might be an earthquake deep below the ocean but from above we only see the waves giant, Fire only burns when there is a candle to hold it upright, Angels are possible only when the humans are kind, not when the demon's still in mind, Stars dazzle only when the night sky is dark. Maybe this is world, where miracles happen only when the disasters embark.
As I laid down to fall asleep the last thing I heard was the static noise from the television and felt the early afternoon warmth. “The sun must be glad this afternoon.” I wondered if the sun would greet me with that same enthusiasm when I got up in the late afternoon that same day. I opened my eyes and instead I was met with the raging sun and a figure I couldn’t fully make out. It stared at me as I stared at it. I took a step forward, so did the figure before me. We were standing on shallow water. The atmosphere hissed but the figure did not flinch. The figure turned its back and began to...
I love Ohio. Sometimes it's unbearably cold or uncomfortably hot, there are bad things in every place, but overall, this place is my home and has been a home for my family, friends and everything in my life. And I know it is home to so many others as well. Some of the most precious parts of Ohio I strongly believe are the land, water systems, animals, as well as the people. I could tell you how Ohio lost ⅓ of its agricultural land between 1950-2000. I have been trying to compile statistics from the past two decades to see the more recent loss, because my personal experience leads me to feel...
When world leaders came together for climate change in Paris, it signified the recognition of climate change as a major threat in the twenty first century. Climate change has left no country untouched, every country has witnessed the impacts of climate change including melting of ice, heat waves floods, fire and prolonged droughts periods. Climate change is largely a man-made problem caused by fumes and gases emitted by industries depleting the ozone layer. New strategies to combat climate change require heavy industrialized nations to cut emission by 40% and invest on production and...
