Privilege: recognize it
A simple guide to acknowledge the different forms of privilege. The meaning of the word ‘’privilege’’ is often misunderstood. We usually all have some kind of privilege (even without acknowledging it) but that does not mean we don’t struggle at all. The actual definition of privilege is: ‘’a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group’’ By this statement you might think that you don’t own any type of ‘’Special Right’’ but the reality is that most likely, you do. Let’s discover it together with a fun quiz! All you have to do is mark YES or NO...
Feminism - The truth behind the controversies
FEMINISM - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE CONTROVERSIES With all the talk on feminism recently, we’ve had some good coming out of the nascent conversations around the topic but we’ve also had even more misunderstanding on a very basic issue. So let me define it as google would, feminism is equality in political, social, and economic rights for people of all gender. Why feminism then? Why not simply humanism? So let’s address the question that gets asked not because there’s a valid argument behind it but to shun a valid movement. Feminism because it’s the female gender that we are striving to bring at...
I know you can do it #worldchildrensday
I dream of a better world, an equality world, where girls and boys have the same right, where every little girl can dream of a future as much as the boys. I trust the next generation, and I hope this kids will made of our world a better place because I know they can do it. This is for you children, I trust you, I have hope in you, you are smart, and you can do whatever you want to do, don’t let them stop you, they’ll try, but you have the strength to don’t let them do that. Please fight for your rights, please respect the others and please don’t stay silence. I know you can do it.
Reimagine the World
I was invited to reimagine and draw the world I want to live in after COVID-19 as part of our World Children's Day #voicesofyouth challenge. This illustration that I draw is what I want the world to be and as they gave us some things to reimagine • Reimagine a greener and more sustainable world • Reimagine the future of wellbeing and mental health • Reimagine the future of education and work • Reimagine a future without discrimination • Other children’s rights or development issues that are important to me I hope this illustration of mine inspires you all especially the youth nowadays. The...
World Children's Day 2020
#unicef #voicesofyouth — I am Faith Cayetano, 19, one with UNICEF, Voices Of Youth and the global youth. Today, as we celebrate the World Children’s Day, we continue to build a better world and give voice to the youth. Few days until Christmas — COVID is still in existence, setting impediments longer than what the majority can take. Precautions filling up the spaces of the must-dos and rules overtaking the regular . Still and all, the most important thing that is not going to be taken away is hope. For people, most specifically the youth, hope lights the way to the better. It creates the way...

The lack of representation in important conversations stops now!
Intersectionality is a framework that aims to understand that a person’s discrimination and privilege are all dependent on their individual social and political identities. It shows that everyone experiences both empowerment and oppression uniquely. Intersectionality is often absent in critical conversations relating to policy and law making despite our knowledge of its importance in these settings. Which leads me to this question, how can policies be made when the people they are affecting aren’t present in the conversation? The duty of policy making is often left to a homogeneous group of...
Together Despite our Differences
People have always seen the surface, The surface of a book, The surface of an object, The surface of a person Pretty or ugly, Brunette or blonde, Black or white As though one’s inner beauty can be seen One’s inner soul “This isn’t me, My colour isn’t who I am” They cry, But no one hears No one listens. Black is strong, Black is bold, Black is the colour of the ashes we will all become. We are one, Under the sun, We are together, For ever and ever And we love each other, We love every single one of us.
My "Unseen Wounds"
Last year my best friend Selim asked me if I would be part of a documentary he had to shoot for his class. I wasn't hesitant, I had written about the topic before but never really talked about it to anyone especially in a video. I kept postponing the shooting date for months and months because I'd just get so anxious thinking of all I had been through, nothing I'd wish upon anyone. Than we finally set a date. Beautiful sunny day. I had my two best friends Selim and Enis behind the camera, them too listening for the first time. I talked as my friend wiped his tears and I felt so supported and...
POST PANDEMIC, LET'S BUILD A HUMANE WORLD AGAIN
I want to knock at the doors of humanity again And smile as it welcomes me in As I ask - Don’t you want a proof Of my sexuality, my religion, and creed A card to say, I am accepted in your realm That I’ve tampered and rebuilt myself To fit your normal That I no longer resemble me But hey at least you’ll accept this And it says - Don’t be silly, we’re all flowers from the same seed Humanity, love, that’s the only label you’ll ever need I want to celebrate the bells of Christmas eve, Dance to the tunes of bhajans sung by priests Partake in the discussions of atheism That’s the diversity I want...

Because I am a girl
My grandmother was born a girl into a family that would never allow her to go to school or learn, the two things she wanted most. She had told me once that she would sometimes sneak out and hide near the school windows to just hear the teachers and learn what she could. Then they married her to my grandfather. She sent all her kids to school and she helped them study every night so that she could learn as well. She was the smartest, strongest woman I have ever met. That I will ever meet. I often imagine what she would've become had they let her study. Sometimes I think a teacher for sure...
Toward the bright future: Wonder Woman inside us
Have you ever heard a famous saying “A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong it is until it’s in hot water.”? If you guess right, then yes…that saying is from Eleanor Roosevelt, First Chair of the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women. Indeed, we have never known our true strength and determination until we face the toughest time in our life. At the age of 6, I was bullied by my classmates and suffered from the spiritual wounds. I became an easy target for bullying in class because I was so small for my age. I still remember all of my notebooks were stolen after the break...

Can we really accomplish freedom?
It is approximately 30 years after Apartheid in South Africa and we seem to have made progress. However, have we actually accomplished what we should have? The answer to this question is: no. Many of the Apartheid hero’s and true fighters remain poor and continue to live in shacks. I may not have been part of the Old ANC that fought for freedom and emancipation but I don’t believe this is what they were fighting for. South Africa is one of the most corrupt countries today. I think it is time we stop dwelling on this fact and focus on how we change it. Evidently, talking about the corruption...
